3D TV - Fad Or the Next Big Step?

The big box-office returns scored by 3D films like Avatar and Up have led the showbiz moguls to foresee that the next giant leap will involve taking 3D to television. It has been foreseen that couch potatoes around the world will be wowed by the entry of 3D small Screens into their homes. It's an aspiration that the shift to 3D home systems will be just as much of an uPh Meters of quality. Also, while cinema patrons may be willing to suffer with cumbersome 3D glasses for a few hours, TV audiences may be significantly less appreciative of the requirement to wear glasses. What's worse, 3D televisions will certainly be much more pricy, and the program producers may not be able to adequately Supply the outcry by viewers to make it worthwhile upgrading. Likewise, experiencing 3D can induce headaches, even in a movie theater, and compressing 3D into a TV-sized screen could be even more uncomfortable. Home-based 3D technology is still in a prototype phase, so it could take some years for the revolution to gather momentum. For now, it may be more reasonable just to wait and see.

3D TVs Vying For Attention

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2011 showcased many 3D TV displays which varied from one manufacturer to another. However, there were a few manufacturers that stood above the rest when it came to showing their latest offerings.

Toshiba was one of the manufacturers that showed their latest innovations for the year. In 3D TV Toshiba showcased their 3D TV without glasses that come in sizes from 24 inches to 65 inch Screens. It is good to know that there is now an option that frees viewers from using 3D TV glasses. The no glasses 3D TV was very interesting because it sported 4K resolution which is four times more than 1080p for 2D images as well as full 1080p resolution for each eye when the TV is in 3D mode. But, for 3D viewing the viewing angle was limited.

3D TV

Another manufacturer was Sony. The latest 3D TV Sony had displayed ranged from gaming, cinema, media, and sports. It also featured the 24 inch OLED TV which is a 3D TV led that required no glasses. However, the model was only a prototype.

In 3D TV Panasonic also had a selection that was impressive. Their sports category featured 1080p plasma 3D TVs. The picture quality was excellent and made the viewer want to watch a 3D TV.

Another manufacturer of 3D TV Samsung highlighted their new light active shutter 3D glasses which are lighter than any of the other glasses offered by other manufacturers at the CES. Samsung also featured their largest 3D TV which was a massive 75 inches.

Still another display featured 3D TV LG. They had displayed 1080p Plasma tv that caught everyone's eye. Although all their 3D models use active shutter glasses, their displays were very attractive. They also had the largest 3D TV Lcd which was an impressive 84 inch model. With LG TVs, in addition to their 3D capability, the new TV sets also features LED backlighting that also comes with local dimming. Plus, they also offer internet streaming content access which is dubbed as NetCast that which includes VUDU, Netflix, Yahoo! Widgets and You Tube.

There were many other manufacturers who successfully displayed their latest 3D TV sets and many of the visitors as CES were very impressed. However, the problem with 3D TV is their price. For people who would like to get their 3D TV cheap, their best choice may be to look at the used TV market. The same goes for those who want to get their 1080p tv cheap. It may take some time for the prices of new 3D televisions sets to become more affordable for the average consumer.

A consumer may be able to find a more affordable price for a 3D TV by looking at the various 3D TV deals that are offered my major retailers during Peak shopping season. Or by doing some research and looking at the various 3D TV ad that usually apPears from time to time. There are also many opportunities where retailers offer 3D TV sales.

3D-TV - Is It Ready to Enter to Your House Now?

3D - Three Dimensional TV is gaining momentum unlike any other technology in recent History and will help manufacturers to come out of the 2008 recession. The market is ready for it and lot of people are embracing it. In 2009, all Consumers Electronics FAir displayed 3D -TV and consumers were thrilled to see the display. Now consumers have accepted 3D-TV and by 2011, it will be marketed at an affordable price tag.

When you look at an object in the real world, you will see in three dimensions. But when you see the same object in TV, it will look flat. 3D-TV will take care of this shortfall and will show you the object in the same way as you will see in the real world. It is definitely a pleasing, interesting and meaningful viewing. But, how it is done?

3D TV

This is all related to the way our eyes focus an object. We have two eyes separated by a small distance. Our brain generates a 3D Picture by having two eyes spaced at a short distance apart. Each eye captures a slightly different view of the object in front of it and fusing these two images together, our brain generates a single image that has a real depth. This trick is called "stereopsis."

3D-TV - Is It Ready to Enter to Your House Now?

We are all habituated in seeing all objects in 3D and we do not question how we see it. But normally the pictures in TV or in Computer Screen are 2D, i.e. two dimensional. We have to apply some tricks to see it in 3D or Three Dimensional.

Till date there are four ways to do it or rather there are four 3D-TV technologies.

1. Anaglyph - In this system, we have to wear eye glasses with colored lenses, so that our brain can fuse together the partly overlapping red and cyan pictures on the Screen.

2. Polarizing - here, we have to wear lenses that Filter light waves in different ways so that each eye sees a different picture.

3. Active Shutter - Here, the left and right lenses of our glasses open and close at high speed in rapid alteration and we will view separate images or frames on the Screen.

4. Lenticular - In this system, we do not need glasses. Instead a row of plastic lenses in front of the screen bends slightly different, side by side images so that they travel to our left and right eyes.

All future 3D TV will be made on this "Lenticular" technology.

Big players in TV Industry are devising practical ways to bring three-dimensional television (3D TV) to our homes. The Discovery channel is forming a Joint Venture Company with Sony and IMAX to deliver 3D TV Channels.

When 3D TV Channels, 3D Movies will come into practice, we will definitely go for 3D TV, may be at a little higher cost also.

This 3D Television will be a turnaround for the Consumer Electronics manufacturers in the whole World and in turn we will get a marvelous piece of Home Entertainment system and we will enjoy the 3D TV after a busy days work back to home.

What Is 3D TV?

It only seems like yesterday that we were introduced to the world of Hdtv. The world has only just started to get used to the Hdtv technology that we have suddenly been given 3D television.

3D TV is the new technology of the future and one that apPears to be bringing about exciting and innovative change in the way we watch TV. The introduction of 3D TV is not only an exciting development for television viewers but its application in other fields such as computing, mobile phones, gaming and so many more other applications will be just as exciting.

3D TV

So what is 3D TV about? What is the big hype in this new technology and what do we have to look forward to? Let's start with the basics. 3D TV is basically recreating the 3D cinema experience that we have become accustomed to seeing in specialist movie theatres around the world. The viewer can basically watch films in a three dimensional mode to enjoy a more realistic and an immersive experience at the comfort of their home. The added third dimension adds a more immersive and a realistic experience for the viewer.

What Is 3D TV?

The three-dimensional experience is being recreated with the help of a range of 3D TVs that have been released by a number of the leading TV manufacturers from around the world. Most of the 3D TV models that have been released onto the market essentially require the viewer to wear specialist 3D TV glasses that allow the viewer to interpret the three-dimensional image as one image through their glasses. Wearing of the 3D TV glasses to watch most of the TV models that have been released onto the market is a pre-requisite.

Most of the manufacturers that have released 3D TVs have made the 3D TV glasses that are specific to their own brand of 3D Ts. That essentially means that 3D TV glasses made by Samsung for example will not work on a Sony 3D TV and vice versa. Although this may be restricting the viewer to enjoy 3D TV more freely, TV manufacturers seem to be aware of the fact that there is a need for the 3D TV glasses that can universally be worn across the different brands of 3D TVs.

Some manufacturers are taking even more innovative steps to make our viewing experience even better. Manufacturers such as Toshiba have already experimented with releasing 3D TV models that do not require the user to wear any glasses at all. We can see this technology developing much further so that the viewer can enjoy a convenient and the realistic experience.

Is it Worth Investing in 3D TV Now?

What is actually 3D TV?

Before discussing this issue, it is important for one to have an understanding of what is actually the 3D TV we are talking about now.

3D TV

The short answer is that 3D television is a display technology that enables viewers in the home to experience TV programs, movies and video games in what is referred to as a stereoscopic effect. It relies on the use of stereopsis or separation, to add the illusion of a third dimension to an otherwise two-dimensional flat image.

Is it Worth Investing in 3D TV Now?

This illusion is created by simultaneously displaying two separate full-size but slightly different images of the same scene - one for the left eye and the other for the right eye. The differences in the two images are intended to mimic in very simple terms, the way the human vision system sees an object. The distance separating the eyes of a human being - referred to as interpupillary distance - helps the eyes see objects from a slightly different angle, leading to two slightly but distinct images. The brain processes these differences to generate among others, relative depth information to create the 3-dimensional image.

However, the way 3D TV generates a 3D image is not exactly in line with the way we see an object in space in that while 3D TV relies on image separation only, human vision uses both image separation and eye focusing cues to determine image depth. For many, this is not much of an issue in that image separation is often sufficient for the brain to determine relative image depth. However, this difference leads to a number of undesirable effects with 3D TV such as disorientation and in some cases, even headaches.

What is different from the 3D we have seen in the recent past is that now we are talking about a 3D experience that can support a 1080p HD image for each eye. Up to now, this was not possible.

Challenges of 3D in the Home

Well, 3D TV in the home has become a reality but... we believe that 3D Television still has to overcome a few serious issues before it will become a true mainstream technology in home entertainment.

In other words, it will still take a few more years for 3D TV technology to become the mainstream TV technology in the home.

Technology is still very expensive to be affordable by the average family. Suffice to say that at the present prices, a typical 3D Hdtv and two pAirs of 3D-glasses - (3D glasses are necessary for the displayed image by a 3D TV set to apPear as a 3D illusion) cost some ,000 more than a 2D equivalent Hdtv. And two sets of glasses are the bare minimum; you a pAir of 3D glasses for each member of the family viewing 3D TV content.

3D glasses - 3D TV's necessary evil: We mentioned the 3D glasses. The issue with the glasses does not stop at their expensive price tag (circa 0 per pAir). The added inconvenience brought about by the necessary 3D glasses is definitely something that not even TV makers know if the end consumer would eventually accept. You see, wearing a pAir of 3D glasses for an extended period to watch one of the latest Blu ray movies in 3D is an acceptable compromise. But to enjoy all your TV viewing with a rather over sized 3D glasses is another matter.

3D experience in the home is different from that enjoyed at the movie theater. While there is no doubt that the 3D TV experience in the home is definitely pleasing, yet it is less immersive and impressive than in the movie theater.

3D Content: True 3D TV content is a scarce resource and no matter what the movie and entertainment industry will be doing in this respect, it will remain so for a number of years to come in comparison to what you have in 2D. It is true that some 3D HDTVs come with a 2D-to-3D converter but this would be like the vague virtual surround you get from an old stereo recording.

Upgrade Reluctance: Many have just upgraded from their tube TV to a flat panel TV; some have even got a step further and purchased their second Lcd or plasma TV. These are still enjoying their 'new' HDTV purchase and I do not think that they will be the once to upgrade to the latest 3D TV technology - at least for now and at the present pricing.

3D TV Converter - Can You Change Your 2D Television to 3D?

With the recent release of a plethora of 3-dimensional feature films, the desire for 3D televisions in the home has risen dramatically. If you have seen films like Disney's Up or James Cameron's Avatar with special RealD glasses, you know that 3D can make one's viewing experience much more enjoyable. In fact, Avator has been critically acclaimed to have the best visuals of any film, ever (thanks in large part to its use of 3-D).

The problem is, although people want 3D in their homes, many people don't want to dish out the money for a new, "3D-ready" Lcd display. So, the concept of buying a 3D TV Converter has been introduced to the public.

3D TV

These 2D to 3D converters are surprisingly inexpensive: around 0. They have been around for a while (since as early as 2004), but have not had that much popularity. But in 2009 and early 2010, the sales of these products have shown a marked increase.

3D TV Converter - Can You Change Your 2D Television to 3D?

The problem is, these converters offer only cheap imitations of real 3D. They don't actually make anything 3-dimensional. Rather, these converters just split the image on your TV into 2 images, then uses polarized lenses to make the image on your display "pop out". However, the converters add no depth to the image.

On real 3-D ready televisions, the background of videos look like they are flush with the TV Screen, while objects on the foreground pop out. The difference between the background and the foreground is what makes watching 3D movies enjoyable. Without depth, you are just watching the same movie, except the whole thing looks slightly enlarged.
